Online Writing Group

Meeting Tuesday and Friday mornings
9 Weeks: February-March 2021
Starting at 10am EDT | 9am CDT | 8am MDT | 7am PDT

This is a space for writers to meet online and write together (via a private meeting room in Zoom).

A common challenge facing writers is showing up on a regular basis, and a writing group can help with showing up—with holding space for your writing.

How will the writing group be structured?

The group will meet for 3 hours each week. We’ll spend the first 30 minutes checking in about our projects (sharing goals, reporting on the last week’s writing, and planning for the next week). Then we’ll write for the remaining 2 ½ hours.

If you need to leave early or skip a week, no problem.
If you need to step away (e.g., to take a call or bio-break), no worries.
This time is YOUR time.

The Zoom meeting room will remain open for all 3 hours, though I’ll ask that we mute ourselves during the 2 ½ hours of writing time. At the end of the 3 hours, we can offer words of encouragement and good wishes, while signing off.

I’ll be available for quick questions via chat during the writing time, and I’m happy to pair you with an accountability partner (another group member) if you’d like additional check-ins during or after the group meeting.

If you want additional support for your writing (e.g., conversations about or feedback on drafts), then consider registering for the “full writing package” or exploring one-with-one coaching sessions with Beth.

NOTE: The writing group needs at least 4 participants to run and will be capped/closed at 12 writers.

Why participate in an online writing group?

Through writing groups, we invest in ourselves, in our work, and in our commitments.

Specifically, online writing groups have the potential to:

  • Hold creative space for incubating, developing, and completing writing projects
  • Build and strengthen relationships among writers across distance
  • Maintain momentum for writing projects even when facing other due dates and demands on our time
  • Provide just-in-time support, mentoring, and processing of what comes up through and around writing
  • Co-create a life-giving writing environment where we can share ideas with engaged and supportive readers

To learn more about how I approach and why I believe in online writing groups, check out “‘Hanging Out’: Cultivating Writing Groups Online,” a piece co-authored with former writing group members Tanya Cochran, Rasha Diab, and Thomas Ferrel.

When will the writing group be offered?

Tuesdays
Tuesday mornings for 9 weeks (February-March)
Running for 3 hours: 10am to 1pm Eastern

Feb. 2, 9, 16, 23
Mar. 2, 9, 16, 23, 30

Fridays
Friday mornings for 9 weeks (February-early April)
Running for 3 hours: 10am to 1pm Eastern

Feb. 5, 12, 19, 26
Mar. 5, 12, 19, 26
Apr. 2

After registering, you’ll receive information about how to join the group—to be hosted in a private meeting room in Zoom. Participants are encouraged to join with video, but may choose the audio-only option as well.

So long as there’s interest, I’ll continue to offer writing groups throughout the year, and I’ll add other days as well. If you’re interested in future writing groups, let me know.

What is the cost?

$125: Tuesday Group Only (9 sessions)
$125: Friday Group Only (9 sessions)
$225: Bundled Price for both Tuesdays and Fridays
$450: Full Writing Package: Participation in both groups and two one-with-one coaching sessions to provide tailored feedback on your writing

These prices are for people whose current careers are financially sustaining. If the cost is prohibitive for any reason—from being a graduate student to adjuncting to finding yourself between work situations—please reach out, and let’s talk about a fair price for you.

And Patreon subscribers receive an additional $20 discount: thanks to patrons, who make the work here at Heart-Head-Hands: Everyday Living for Justice possible.

Who will facilitate the writing group?

This program is offered by Beth Godbee, Ph.D., a public educator and writer with deep commitments to social, racial, and environmental justice.

Beth brings years of experience as a writer and writing teacher (previously tenured professor in composition, rhetoric, and literacy studies). She’s both participated in and led writing groups and has worked in writing centers, community literacy programs, and writing across the curriculum programs for many years.

How can I learn more?

Contact Beth with any questions, concerns, or accessibility considerations.

And if you’d like to receive the discounted rate for this and future offerings, become a subscriber via Patreon.

Thanks!

I'm grateful that my partner Jonathan and I decide I'm grateful that my partner Jonathan and I decided to leave DC last week. (It was a complicated decision during the pandemic, but we’re grateful for car camping supplies, including a portable toilet and the capacity to plan + pack food for the week.)

Time near the ocean and in marshlands provided a real respite. Here are a few of my favorite photos -- with deep gratitude again (and always) for the earth.
