Blessed Change

Filed Under: Contemplative Practices, Emotional Literacies By Beth Godbee September 28, 2018 1 Comment

This card from Doreen Virtue’s “Magical Mermaids and Dolphins” oracle deck says “Blessed Change” in large letters at the top. An image appears below these letters and in the card’s center showing a mermaid floating upside down among seaweed, coral, and shells. At the card’s bottom appears the message: “A major life change brings you great blessings.”

What does it mean to turn our lives upside down? How might looking at the world differently inspire new perspectives? What new perspectives are needed to enact more equitable relations? In recent weeks, I’ve been pulling this “Blessed Change” card whenever using Doreen Virtue’s “Marginal Mermaids and Dolphins” oracle deck as part of everyday divination, a meditation practice for grounding and interpreting lived experience. I started pulling divination or oracle ... Read more ...

Inside the Chrysalis, or Experiencing Mess, Mess, and More Mess

Image of a fuzzy yellow-and-brown caterpillar with black and white hairs sticking out of its body, positioned on a wooden stick. This photo was taken along a hiking trail, so there’s faded grey and green in the background.

It’s not uncommon for me to ride emotional roller-coasters with swings from sweet to sour as I go about my days. More and more, I’ve noticed these swings as I’ve tuned in with my emotions and embodied self through Reiki, yoga, and other contemplative practices. The more I do inner work and the more I embrace mess, the more the messiness of being an always-incomplete, imperfect human inevitability shows up. Still, if I’m being honest with myself, the past few weeks have ... Read more ...

A Love Letter to Students Surviving Sexual Violence

Filed Under: Everyday Feminism, Higher Education By Beth Godbee April 19, 2018 2 Comments

Handwritten note saying, "Dear Reader, Every semester I’ve taught, students have shared with me stories of sexual violence and survival."

As we near the end of spring semester, students in both my “Contemplative Writing” and “Writing for Social Justice” courses are pulling together projects to make interventions in some way. Several students are addressing rape culture, and one student is compiling a book of letters by and for survivors of sexual violence. She hopes that others at our university will read the letters, write additional ones, and add threaded response—facilitating healing through ... Read more ...

Revealing the Cultural Patterns of Rape Culture

A pyramid showing the escalation of rape culture from "11th Principle: Consent!" The pramid is separated in 4 parts, with the lower parts being in yellow and the highest in red. The highest tier is "Explicit violence," the second highest is "Removal of autonomy," the second lowest is "Degradation," and the lowest is "Normalisation." Each level provides examples of each tier ranging from gang rape as the most extreme and sexist attitudes at the lowest level.

It’s been a few weeks since the #metoo hashtag prompted discussion about the widespread and systemic nature of sexual violence. As I’ve shared stories and listened to others’, I’ve been struck by frequent questioning: “Does ______ really count as sexual harassment or assault?” And that question has led me to consider the many moments of sexual intimidation that aren’t harassment or assault per se, but constitute violence and are part of rape culture nonetheless. Here ... Read more ...

Me Too: Standing Against Sexual Violence

This images shows the #metoo hashtag in white script printed diagonally on a blackboard with messy erasure marks in the background.

I didn’t learn to drive in drivers ed. In fact, I never drove the car that whole semester because the teacher was a creep. When girls would drive, he’d start off complimenting perfume or jewelry or clothing. Then he’d lean into the driver to observe them better (the perfume or jewelry or clothing). From there, he’d put his hand on the girl’s leg, sometimes leaving it there and sometimes moving it higher along the thigh. All of this with two additional students in the ... Read more ...
