Professional Loss, Complicated Grief, and Responding to the Dissolution of CCCC

Filed Under: Emotional Literacies, Everyday Feminism, Higher Education, Racial Justice By Beth Godbee August 14, 2026 2 Comments

This photo is of Rasha Diab and Beth Godbee at the 2015 Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC), the year we presented “Toward a Richer Vocabulary of Power, Part of the Risk and Promise of Relational Work,” along with colleague Thomas Ferrel. We’re working in the hotel lobby with papers spread out and laptops open. We are both smiling.

On Friday, July 27th, the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) announced the dechartering of the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC), the primary professional association for writing studies. Within a swift two-day period, this 77-year-old association was dissolved, and it has felt like a significant loss within ongoing attacks on and dismantling of higher education.  There are many efforts underway toward strategizing and rebuilding a ... Bear Ways: A Commitment Statement in Poem Form

Filed Under: Emotional Literacies, Everyday Feminism, Racial Justice, Recipes and Why Vegan? By Beth Godbee June 30, 2026 Leave a Comment

A bright yellow diamond shaped sign with black letters spelling "BEAR CROSSING" in all upper case letters. The sign also shows a drawing of two black bears.

Earlier in June, after months of intense revision, I finally updated my commitment statement. It was a long time coming, as I returned to southern Appalachia and newly to Asheville—Cherokee Land in Western North Carolina (WNC)—back in 2024, ten weeks before Hurricane Helene hit. My writing has been coming slower since the move partly because of recovery and healing from the storm. Partly because of the time involved in putting down roots, building community, and ... Commitment Statements: Questions and Answers Pointing Toward Action

Filed Under: Contemplative Practices, Everyday Feminism, Higher Education, Racial Justice By Beth Godbee February 28, 2022 Leave a Comment

This image shares folded paper in the shape of a leaf surrounded by the words: “Small-group commitment statement coaching. Part II. Wednesday, March 2nd 1:00-3:00pm ET (2 hours). Heart-Head-Hands.com. Email to get registered.”

Commitment statements are living documents: a way to clarify deep dedications and priorities and to make them actionable both in everyday life and for the long haul. For several years now, I’ve been working with commitment statements as a way to better understand my own commitments and where I’m out of alignment with them—and, importantly, to realign and strive toward justice. This work has grown out of my collaborative research on “Making Commitments to Racial Justice ... Read more ...

New Year Reflections: Hanging by a Thread Is Better Than No Thread at All

Filed Under: Emotional Literacies, Everyday Feminism, Recipes and Why Vegan? By Beth Godbee December 31, 2021 Leave a Comment

Image reads “2022 downloading,” alongside a spider dropping down on a single thread. Confetti lights appear at the top and bottom against a dark blue background.

In these weeks leading up to the new year—during the holidays and covid surge—I’ve found myself saying, “I’m hanging by a thread.” And friends have reminded me that one thread is better than no threads at all. It’s true. I’ve witnessed spiders suspended in air by a single thread. I’ve seen them descend to the ground gracefully with that same thread and use it as a first step to rebuilding webs. (Spiders teach me a lot!) As we welcome the new year, I’m reminding myself ... Read more ...

Contemplative Practices for Setting Intentions and Welcoming the New Year

Filed Under: Contemplative Practices, Everyday Feminism By Beth Godbee December 31, 2020 Leave a Comment

This image reads “What is currently giving me energy—firing me up or inspiring me? and other questions for the new year …” against a light blue-gray background. A cream-colored candle and flame appear with pink-peach glowing dots. Attribution to Heart-Head-Hands.com appears in the lower right-hand corner.

As we approach the new year (saying goodbye to 2020 and hello to 2021), I recognize that this year especially is calling for intentional reflection, ritual, and recommitment—ways to mark the passage of time and to honor longings for change. Over the past weeks, I’ve received multiple questions for the Patreon Q&A newsletter asking for meditations and resources to set resolutions and goals for the new year. In this blog post, I answer by offering contemplative ... Read more ...
