Oat and Bean Burgers: Quick 5-Ingredient Veggie Burgers

Filed Under: Everyday Feminism, Recipes and Why Vegan? By Beth Godbee March 13, 2026 Leave a Comment

A plate full of veggie burgers that have been stacked on top of each other on a white plate after being cooked.

When I started blogging in 2016—wow, that’s a decade ago!—I knew I wanted to share recipes and talk about food, because it’s so central to everyday life. Literally, food is the fuel of everyday living and striving toward justice. Over the years, I’ve pulled back on recipes and “why vegan?” posts not because they’re less important but because life is pulling me in many directions. Over time, I’ve shifted toward more whole food plant based (WFPB) eating, still working on ... Read more ...

Coaching as a Way of Working with Fears

Filed Under: Contemplative Practices, Emotional Literacies, Everyday Feminism By Beth Godbee February 25, 2025 Leave a Comment

Beth in her childhood years stands in a purple skirt and white shirt in a grassy, mountain-surrounded field near her father who holds smoking fireworks.

Recent coaching sessions have been addressing fear in one way or another. Surely, fear is pronounced in these times -- with threats coming from many directions; with uncertainty, suffering, and crisis amplified; and with cruelty, cuts, and a coup all central to everyday experiences. In this week's writing group, one member said that they're having to make decisions about how to show up at their institution, and this question aligned with questions I'm hearing in ... Mid-Day Meditations: Pausing to Reflect and Reset

Filed Under: Contemplative Practices, Emotional Literacies, Everyday Feminism By Beth Godbee May 28, 2024 Leave a Comment

A video title-screen for a Heart-Head-Hands meditation video. The title is "Mid-Day Reset: A Moment of Calm" and the video is led by Beth Godbee, Ph.D. The background is a light purple color and there is an image of a candle, glasses on a notebook, and green ivy growing across a table.

Guided meditations are part of the one-day writing retreats that I offer on a rotating and recurring basis. As a writer, I know the importance of getting grounded, setting intentions, and remembering what and why I am called to write before I begin. Similarly, as a facilitator, I find that contemplative practices—whether meditations or freewriting or other grounding practices—can slow down the tendency to jump into action, interrupting autopilot and urgency ... “Is This Burnout?” New Article Asking and Answering the Question

Filed Under: Contemplative Practices, Emotional Literacies, Everyday Feminism, Higher Education By Beth Godbee January 26, 2024 Leave a Comment

Screenshot of the article’s start with the title (I AM EDITOR: Is This Burnout? You Aren’t Alone in Asking the Question), author names (Beth Godbee, Ph.D. and Candace Epps-Robertson, Ph.D.), and tagline (Though burnout can feel like such an isolating experience, it doesn’t have to be.). The article begins with a photo of Beth and Candace, a disclosure statement, and an invitation to reach out to the authors personally. Background is coral and white with strips of teal.

“Is this burnout or…? So many of us are asking this question and wondering if what we’re feeling is burnout. Is it burnout or exhaustion? Burnout or anxiety? Burnout or worker exploitation? Burnout or unreasonable expectations? Burnout or toxic workspace? Burnout or I’m 100% in caregiver mode? Burnout or over-capacity? Burnout or the world is on fire? Burnout or a breaking point? Burnout or …?”  This is the opening inquiry of a collaborative article that Candace ... Read more ...

Honoring Struggles and Showing Up Imperfectly for Palestinian Liberation

Filed Under: Emotional Literacies, Everyday Feminism, Racial Justice By Beth Godbee November 18, 2023 1 Comment

This photo shows the public labyrinth in Georgetown, one of the places where I have grounded myself in the past few weeks—to get centered and listen to guidance toward also continuing to feel-learn-and-act (heart-head-hands). Shoring up inner reservoirs for continued outcry against violence in Gaza and toward Palestinian liberation.

To show up in this piece, which I’ve been trying to get out for weeks, I’ve realized that the only way to do so is to bring my full messy self. I don’t want to polish writing when that’s not true to the process or the way forward. As writers, we often have lots of discarded text and false starts. And we often spend hours weaving threads together into a cohesive whole. I really appreciate this work, and it gives me joy to do the weaving. Stitch by stitch, I understand ... Read more ...

Intervening into Burnout, Building a Sense of What’s Possible

Filed Under: Emotional Literacies, Everyday Feminism, Higher Education, Racial Justice By Beth Godbee July 7, 2023 Leave a Comment

This screenshot from Inside Higher Ed reads: “Career Advice. July 07, 2023. Intervening into Burnout. Beth Godbee presents a number of tangible ways that academics can build a sense of what’s possible, structurally as well as individually. By Beth Godbee.”

A new article, “Intervening into Burnout,” appears in Inside Higher Ed today. In this follow-up piece to “Honoring Ourselves and Each Other Through Burnout,” I offer examples of creative interventions into burnout. These examples are gifted to me through coaching, so I write with deep gratitude for people who are trying different ways of being, doing, feeling, thinking, relating and imagining in higher education. Here’s an excerpt: “Burnout is also never ... Read more ...

Doing the Holidays Differently: Untangling from the Mythical Norm and Revising Rituals for “the Holiday Season”

Filed Under: Contemplative Practices, Emotional Literacies, Everyday Feminism By Beth Godbee February 2, 2023 1 Comment

Image shows three photos from this year’s holiday season. From left to right: a decorated evergreen tree with reflective gray balls; a forest scene of tall thin trees opening to blue lake and sky; and holly leaves and berries—green and red—symbolic of the season.

Preface: This post took me more than six weeks to write. I started drafting on the winter solstice, so it feels right to publish on the cross-quarter day imbolc. I’ve needed the time to sit with the questions I share in this post—questions that are sure to keep evolving. I hope you’ll come with me on this journey into my spiritual life and desire to do the holidays differently. The Holidays Are Hard. Do They Have to Be? For me and for many of us, the holidays are hard. ... Read more ...

Begin the New Year with a Writing Group

Filed Under: Everyday Feminism, Higher Education By Beth Godbee December 17, 2022 Leave a Comment

This image shows a writing scene (coffee, flowers, blank page, and pen against wooden planks) and shares information: “Writing groups start again on Jan. 7th. Register for 2 or 4 months: Jan-Feb or Jan-Apr. Many registration options: Heart-Head-Hands.com.”

Registration is open for writing groups starting in January! Writing groups can support us in many ways—from holding creative space to building community with other writers. I’m excited about a few new things: There are now options to join the weekly group on Tuesdays, Fridays, or both days. Dr. Candace Epps-Robertson is joining as a facilitator. There are expanded sliding-scale registration options. Registration includes a one-day writing retreat for every two-month ... Read more ...

Q&A with David Luis Glisch-Sánchez: Life Coaching as Restoring Wholeness

A photo of David smiling looking forward toward the camera. He's wearing a purple guayabera shirt with chunky Black plastic circle frame glasses. David has a silver nose hoop ring. His hair and beard are a mix of dark and light gray. The background consists of green foliage next to and behind David with three circle canopy structures overhead. One canopy is yellow, another blue, and the third red.

This interview with David Luis Glisch-Sánchez, Ph.D. shares how life coaching aligns with living for justice. Recently, David launched Soul Support Life Coaching with focuses on healing and restoring wholeness. I’ve been really excited to witness David share the vision for this work, build the business framework, and begin to offer coaching and workshops.  David is a sociologist who has spent years both doing self-work and studying how others heal “to make whole,” ... Reframing Burnout and Recognizing the Collective Experience

Filed Under: Emotional Literacies, Everyday Feminism, Higher Education, Racial Justice By Beth Godbee May 6, 2022 Leave a Comment

This screenshot shows Inside Higher Ed’s preview of the article and reads: “Career Advice. Honoring Ourselves and Each Other Through Burnout. Dealing with burnout should not be an individual responsibility but a collective one, Beth Godbee writes.” Text appears against a white background with the orange and white Inside Higher Ed logo and a small figure propped against a tumbling stack of papers.

Today, I have a new article published in Inside Higher Ed: “Honoring Ourselves and Each Other Through Burnout.” Here’s the opening: In the past few months, nearly all my conversations have focused on burnout. One friend is running on fumes, another wonders how to keep teaching when her body says no and still another rattles off a near-endless list of what’s not getting done. Such stories are nearly endless, too. The recent Inside Higher Ed opinion piece “Academe, Hear ... Read more ...
