K-W-L: A Career Discernment Practice for Mapping What You Know, Want to Know, and Need to Learn

Filed Under: Contemplative Practices, Everyday Feminism, Higher Education By Beth Godbee September 25, 2026 Leave a Comment

A screenshot of the "Mapping K-W-L (What You Know, Want to Know, and Need to Learn)" worksheet. The worksheet begins "Oftentimes, even if we can imagine..."

This blog post shares a career discernment practice: K-W-L, a way of mapping what you already know, want to know, and need to learn.  Career discernment coaching involves, among many things, listening to and learning from fears, uncertainties, and the many unknowns involved in making change. Sometimes what’s needed is recognizing fear—allowing it to speak, be witnessed, and given a right-sized role. Other times, what’s needed is a way to list and begin to answer ... Read more ...

Summer Grief

A photo capturing the green top of Roan Mountain. Against the green plant life, a slightly cloudy blue sky can be seen, as well as more mountain tops in the background.

My summer memories include June bugsfirefliescicadasbutterfliesbats—all in abundance. I remember visiting the beachfinding sand dollars, picking them up, taking them home.By my teen years, I learned they were alive!I urged others to please — please — help them back into the water. Now, it’s been years since these memories and since I’ve seen one.Where have all the sand dollars gone?On the endangered species list. The summer I turned 18, the radio played ... Read more ...

This Valentine’s Day, Here Are Questions to Hold with Care

Filed Under: Contemplative Practices, Emotional Literacies, Everyday Feminism, Higher Education By Beth Godbee February 14, 2026 Leave a Comment

A light orange background with a large red-orange oval in the center accompanied by a brown quotation mark. Text in the oval reads “Questions for Career Discernment.” Below the oval reads “Consider these and other questions together through career discernment coaching.” followed by the Heart-Head-Hands logo. Decorating all four corners of the image are illustrations of sunflowers. There is one in each corner with a slightly larger sunflower in the upper left and lower right corner.

This Valentine's Day, I want to share gratitude and say again that I'm making it through these times because of community care and creative interventions, including many small affirmations that add up to being here, breathing in and out, writing little by little, and taking it truly day by day.In these times, gifting feels more important than ever, so for the coming months (in my newsletter, via social media, and through YouTube), I'll be offering more prompts and ... Weathering Storms with Words and Images: From the Holler to the Sea (An Anthology)

Filed Under: Contemplative Practices, Emotional Literacies, Everyday Feminism, Racial Justice By Beth Godbee January 30, 2026 1 Comment

The cover of the book "From the Holler to the Sea, An Anthology of Words & Images by Survivors of Hurricane Helene" from Rednecks Rising. The cover of the book shows blue skies and green grassy fields stretching out to a line of trees.

Having just weathered a winter storm—and knowing that we all are weathering storms within the cruel conditions of ICE and ice, of empire and climate crises—I want to share a local publication from the fall, from the one-year anniversary of Helene, a storm that shapes my understanding of storms to come. From the Holler to the Sea I am grateful to Rednecks Rising and Dandelion Scribes and editors Cheyanne Leonardo and Chelsea White-Hoglen for assembling the ... Read more ...

Mantras for Writers

Filed Under: Contemplative Practices, Emotional Literacies, Everyday Feminism By Beth Godbee September 23, 2025 Leave a Comment

A graphic titled "Today's Mantra" with a square of white paper taped to notebook paper with masking tape accompanied by two paper clips and a pencil. Beneath the title and an image of Beth in a red, checkered flannel shirt, working at her computer in front of a bookshelf reads, reads "Reach out for support." In the lower right corner of the image reads "Beth Godbee, Ph.D., Heart-Head-Hands.com: Everyday Living for Justice."

I feel deep gratitude that my life allows me to write, to be in community with writers, to support writers, and to bring writing into the world. And part of being in writing community—writing with and alongside others—is knowing intimately how much can undercut and derail us as writers. Many pressures weigh on our writing and ourselves as writers. And, as writers, we often need inspiration to bring us back to writing. So, this post shares a form of inspiration: ... Read more ...

Meaningful Writing Doesn’t Always Make Its Way into Writing Portfolios

Filed Under: Everyday Feminism, Higher Education By Beth Godbee July 30, 2025 Leave a Comment

Above a college reads "Writing Portfolio for Beth Godbee, Ph.D.". A collage with seven images: an orange rectangular logo for Inside Higher Ed, a stack of various books, a purple book titled, "Pedagogy;" a pink square with "Ms." written inside, a mauve book cover for "Performing Antiracist Pedagogy in Rhetoric, Writing, and Communication," a blue, white, and red cover for the book "Best of the Journals in Rhetoric and Composition 2021," and a rectangular, black and white image of young people standing outside of a bus with the words "Reflections, A Journal of Community-Engaged Writing and Rhetoric" across the image. The word "reflections" is reflected under the title as well. Below the collage reads, " My publications range from peer-reviewed to popular press, from poetry to prose."

I recently created a new writing portfolio, which I am excited to share! Because my SelectedWorks page was sunsetted this summer, I needed a new way to share publications. The portfolio highlights some, while linking to a fuller list (what I’d share as part of an academic CV). I start with academic publications and then share pieces from public and community writing. And I include a final section of meaningful writing that doesn’t always (or even often) make its way ... Read more ...

Recommitting and Reconnecting With Your Writing

Filed Under: Contemplative Practices, Everyday Feminism By Beth Godbee May 16, 2025 Leave a Comment

A a mural in downtown Raleigh (from my recent visit to Candace Epps-Robertson, Ph.D.) shows writing out in the world with a combination of eyes, plants, and a butterfly, along with the text: "There is beauty in the mundane" and "slow down and look inwards." The colorful mural by @nadasink sits alongside street signs, stickers, and the alphabet written in the upper right-hand corner.

The month of May always feels like a time for recommitting and reconnecting: recommitting and reconnecting to creative work, to writing projects (especially those set aside), and to ourselves and the people we write with and for. There's an invitation to start again, as spring is in full bloom and the promise of summer awaits. It's not that the everyday efforts end, but there's the potential of more levity with longer days stretching ahead. There's the potential for ... Read more ...

Befriending Fear and Cultivating Courage

Filed Under: Contemplative Practices, Emotional Literacies, Everyday Feminism, Racial Justice By Beth Godbee April 11, 2025 Leave a Comment

A cardboard sign leaning against a foliage covered fence and a mulch covered ground reads "Courage is Contageous!" Candace Epps-Robertson, Ph.D. of Full Circle Writing, LLC. Candace took this photo of a handwritten sign that asserts: "Courage is contagious!" Check out Candace's offerings here: https://full-circle-writing.com/

I’ve been thinking a lot recently about Maya Angelou's often-circulated quote about courage being the most important virtue: "Without courage, we cannot practice any other virtue with consistency." This quote's been coming to mind (again and again) as I find myself experiencing fear or saying "so much is scary." And so much is! There's so much injustice. What and who we care about are being attacked, fired, dismantled, criminalized, disappeared, hidden, abducted, ... Read more ...

Reflections on Helene: Sharing a Poem “In Gratitude” from Dandelion Scribes

Filed Under: Contemplative Practices, Everyday Feminism By Beth Godbee March 3, 2025 Leave a Comment

A cover of the literary magazine, "From the Holler to the Sea," subtitled, "Hurricane Helene Survivors Speak Out." The cover is decorated with water color-esque art of animals and forests. In the top left corner reads, "dandelionscribes.com" and in the upper right corner, "special thanks to @rednecksrising."

I am so grateful to have a poem included in the collection “From the Holler to the Sea: Hurricane Helene Survivors Speak Out”—a collaboration of the Appalachian poetry space Dandelion Scribes and local organizing collective Rednecks Rising.  Through reading the collection, I am really appreciating the opportunity to reflect on experiences with and changed lives from Hurricane Helene. The framing around “solidarity amidst ongoing global polycrisis” serves as another ... Read more ...
