Why Small Sustaining Support Matters for Creators

Filed Under: Everyday Feminism By Beth Godbee February 15, 2019 Leave a Comment

Since the website launch in December 2018, I’ve been asking for support through Patreon, a platform for creators to make a sustainable income for doing creative work.

Asking for support feels scary. It feels bumpy. Yet, it’s teaching me new ways to be in community, collaboration, and connection with others.

As Chani Nicholas reminds me, it’s important to “ask for what you need,” and so I’m asking that you (dear reader) consider becoming a patron of Heart-Head-Hands.

Image shows Chani Nicholas’s tweet, which reads, "This is your daily reminder to ask for what you need" (from 1/24/19).

I’ve been blogging since 2016 and want to continue offering content for free, ensuring public, open access. This work involves a lot of labor, so I’m asking for those who can contribute a little each month to consider doing so.

In addition to supporting this work, patrons receive benefits, including (1) a monthly newsletter where I answer questions and (2) personalized thank-you packages with original artwork, vegan + gluten-free candy from Amethyst Confectionery, and more.

Sample thank-you package contents, including a homemade card and bookmark, tea for “positive energy,” and vegan + gluten-free candy from Amethyst Confections.
This photo shows two lollipops—coconut chai caramel and lemon with sprinkles—alongside cards for Amethyst Confections.

There are 3 tiers for offering small sustaining support:

This screenshot from Patreon shows the 3 tiers of support described in the blog post with buttons to “join” each tier.

Tier #1: $3 or more per month:
Advocates are strong supporters and receive additional content via monthly Q&A.

Tier #2: $7 or more per month:
Partners give sustaining support and receive a personalized thank-you package in the mail in addition to the monthly Q&A.

Tier #3: $21 or more per month:
Sponsors show up for this work through financial sponsorship. In addition to the monthly Q&A and personalized thank-you package, sponsors receive sneak-peeks into upcoming projects.

Patreon works through the accumulation of many small donations. Donations of $1, $3, $5, and $7 add up!

They add up into income that can be relied on each month.

They add up into making the blog revenue-generating (and not something separate from “paid work”).

They add up into serious support for writing and speaking: support that says, “YES! I’ll put my money behind this project.”

During business coaching this past year—when thinking about potential revenue streams to make Heart Head Hands LLC into a small business—I knew that I’d want to join Patreon. I’ve been a patron of other creators for some time. Currently, I’m supporting (1) How to Survive the End of the World, (2) the Healing Justice Podcast, (3) Dr. A. Breeze Harper (author of Sistah Vegan), and (4) Jardana Peacock Writes.

I believe in funding creative, critical content.

I believe in supporting creators of the content that inspires, motivates, and teaches me.

I believe in making it possible for one’s work to be writing, creating, storytelling, speaking UP, and doing action with words …

This image shares the statement “I believe in supporting creators of the content that inspires, motivates, and teaches me,” against the night sky with shades of black, purple, and orange.

Coming from these beliefs, I’ll ask again, bravely:

Will you consider giving some small amount each month?
