Building an Ecology of Readers

Filed Under: Everyday Feminism, Higher Education By Beth Godbee September 15, 2026 Leave a Comment

A view of an open, blue lake surrounded by green land and trees. The reflection of the white clouds in the sky can be seen on the water.

Writers need readers. A full ecology of readers. Not just one type of reader. Not just one other person. But many interested readers.Readers waiting for drafts.Readers wanting to read more.Readers with curious questions.Readers who can say, "no, it's not working, yet…”Readers who affirm, "Yes, more of this!"Readers who remind us what matters.Readers who keep us going when it's hard.Because writing can be hard for many reasons.Truly, writers need readers. Summer Grief

Filed Under: Emotional Literacies, Everyday Feminism, Recipes and Why Vegan? By Beth Godbee August 31, 2026 Leave a Comment

A photo capturing the green top of Roan Mountain. Against the green plant life, a slightly cloudy blue sky can be seen, as well as more mountain tops in the background.

My summer memories include June bugsfirefliescicadasbutterfliesbats—all in abundance. I remember visiting the beachfinding sand dollars, picking them up, taking them home.By my teen years, I learned they were alive!I urged others to please — please — help them back into the water. Now, it’s been years since these memories and since I’ve seen one.Where have all the sand dollars gone?On the endangered species list. The summer I turned 18, the radio played ... Read more ...

Q&A with Pam Jones, Ph.D.: Butterflies, Kaleidoscopes, and Monsteras. Together, Educators Are Dreaming a New World.

Filed Under: Everyday Feminism, Higher Education, Interviews, Racial Justice By Beth Godbee November 25, 2025 Leave a Comment

A photo of Pam Jones smiling at the camera in a purple sweater and red stone necklace.

Pam Jones, Ph.D. is someone I want you to know. Pam is a compassionate, visionary, and infinitely wise voice in the world of education. Since we've been working together, I've learned so much about intergenerational literacies and imaginative world-building. Pam teaches and inspires me (and so many of us) and holds such hope for what’s possible in striving toward liberation and justice. And now, thankfully, she’s offering to hold space and work one-on-one, with small ... Read more ...

Mantras for Writers

Filed Under: Contemplative Practices, Emotional Literacies, Everyday Feminism By Beth Godbee September 23, 2025 Leave a Comment

A graphic titled "Today's Mantra" with a square of white paper taped to notebook paper with masking tape accompanied by two paper clips and a pencil. Beneath the title and an image of Beth in a red, checkered flannel shirt, working at her computer in front of a bookshelf reads, reads "Reach out for support." In the lower right corner of the image reads "Beth Godbee, Ph.D., Heart-Head-Hands.com: Everyday Living for Justice."

I feel deep gratitude that my life allows me to write, to be in community with writers, to support writers, and to bring writing into the world. And part of being in writing community—writing with and alongside others—is knowing intimately how much can undercut and derail us as writers. Many pressures weigh on our writing and ourselves as writers. And, as writers, we often need inspiration to bring us back to writing. So, this post shares a form of inspiration: ... Read more ...

Q&A with Sarah Gettel: Consultant, Operations Support, and Capacity Coach for Heart-Head-Hands

Filed Under: Everyday Feminism, Interviews, Racial Justice By Beth Godbee May 30, 2025 Leave a Comment

Sarah Gettel sits at her desk wearing a white sweater and clear-rimmed glasses. Turning back to look at the camera, she smiles while petting her large dog, Wilbur, while her two cats, Puck, a black and white cat; and Atticus, a grey cat; sit next to her chair.

I am excited to introduce Sarah Gettel, a good friend and accountability partner who’s been working behind the scenes with Heart-Head-Hands: Everyday Living for Justice.  Sarah and I met in 2019, soon after I’d left my faculty career, through mutual contacts engaged in racial justice organizing in Madison and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. We deepened our relationship in the early days of the pandemic, forming an accountability pod and meeting regularly with Rasha Diab ... Read more ...

Recommitting and Reconnecting With Your Writing

Filed Under: Contemplative Practices, Everyday Feminism By Beth Godbee May 16, 2025 Leave a Comment

A a mural in downtown Raleigh (from my recent visit to Candace Epps-Robertson, Ph.D.) shows writing out in the world with a combination of eyes, plants, and a butterfly, along with the text: "There is beauty in the mundane" and "slow down and look inwards." The colorful mural by @nadasink sits alongside street signs, stickers, and the alphabet written in the upper right-hand corner.

The month of May always feels like a time for recommitting and reconnecting: recommitting and reconnecting to creative work, to writing projects (especially those set aside), and to ourselves and the people we write with and for. There's an invitation to start again, as spring is in full bloom and the promise of summer awaits. It's not that the everyday efforts end, but there's the potential of more levity with longer days stretching ahead. There's the potential for ... Read more ...

Q&A with Candace Epps-Robertson, Ph.D.: Introducing Full Circle Writing, LLC

A colorful collage background that has black text reading, “Q&A with Candace Epps-Robertson, Ph.D.: The Launch of Full Circle Writing, LLC; In collaboration with Heart-Head-Hands: Everyday Living for Justice.” In the bottom right corner is the pink-purple Heart-Head-Hands logo and the blue and purple Full Circle Writing, LLC logo.

Why Don’t I Center “Academic” in My Work?

Filed Under: Contemplative Practices, Everyday Feminism, Higher Education By Beth Godbee January 7, 2025 Leave a Comment

A light purple square with drawings of stars decorating it reads "Characteristics of Writing Groups and the Writers Who Join" on the left side. Separating the halves of the image is a small vertical line with four dots. On the right side of the image is three text boxes, each with a short blurb of text beneath them. The boxes read "Deeply Relational," "Joyfully Redefining," and "Unapologetically Feminist." In the lower right corner of the image "Heart-Head-Hands: Everyday Living for Justice" is written in a mauve.

You probably notice that when I talk about writing support and spaces -- from coaching to writing groups to retreats and workshops -- I don't describe the work as "academic writing support" or name explicitly "academic writing." This is despite the fact that many, MANY of the writers I work with and many of my closest people are doing academic projects, hold affiliations with academic institutions, and of course, are trained in academic ways. Me too!  Similarly, ... Read more ...

Writing Retreats Are for All Sorts of Writing

Filed Under: Contemplative Practices, Everyday Feminism, Higher Education By Beth Godbee December 19, 2024 Leave a Comment

A collage, made by Phoenix Robertson, leans against a gray wall. The canvas is covered in clippings of magazines and the background is painted gold. The collage shows three hands, each in different directions, and from them spring snippets of art, nature, and text.

Writing retreats are for writers creating across genres, at any stage, and for various audiences, including ourselves. But so often, even when we spend our lives working with words, we bracket what counts as “writing,” and we find it hard to claim the role of “writer.” This blog post combines reflections from two of us, Beth and Phoenix, about the experience of one-day, online writing retreats. Together, we want to affirm that, truly: writing is expansive, and writing ... Read more ...

A Well of Capacity Comes from Community

Filed Under: Contemplative Practices, Emotional Literacies, Everyday Feminism By Beth Godbee November 7, 2024 Leave a Comment

A tall, white candle stands in a glass container with purple detailing on the front. The candle's cover reads, "May your choice reflect your hopes and not your fears." The candle sits on a wooden surface in front of a white wall.

Today I want to share as many hugs as possible and remember the well of capacity that comes from community. I feel such deep gratitude for people reaching out and connecting. I feel such deep longing to be in community ~ both locally (back in Asheville + Appalachia) and with beloved community (across space + time). I feel such deep grief over what seems to be the choice of an especially brutal route toward empire collapse. In the midst of these many feelings, I am ... Read more ...
