Spirulina Shake: Love for This Bright Green Smoothie

Filed Under: Recipes By Beth Godbee April 20, 2021 Leave a Comment

As I’ve shared in the last blog post, the past few months have involved a lot of shifts in my diet: keeping vegan + gluten-free eating as the anchor, but eliminating refined sugars and, at least for the time being, eating only cooked and pureed foods.

This shift has me making smoothies every day, and one I’ve particularly enjoyed is this spirulina shake.

It’s sweet, so it satisfies cravings.
It’s simple, so I don’t have to follow instructions.
It’s satisfying, so I feel fulfilled (not like I’m giving something up to make dietary changes).

It’s also green, green, green. Bright neon green, as the photo shows. So, it always makes me smile.

Plus, I feel good about eating extra greens (spirulina, spinach, and sometimes mint). It’s part of self-parenting (more than simply self-care), and it’s “fuel for the road ahead.”

This image shows the spirulina shake (a bright green smoothie) in a clear glass, a brown date attached to the rim, against a white tablecloth.

Spirulina Shake

5 basic ingredients:

Spirulina ~ 2 teaspoons
Spinach ~ 1 cup
Banana ~ 1 banana (fresh or frozen)
Dates ~ 2-3 fresh, pitted dates
Unsweetened almond milk ~ up to 4 cups

Optional add-ins:

Hemp hearts ~ up to 1 tablespoon
Peppermint extract ~ a few drops
Fresh mint leaves ~ a few (to taste)

Instructions:

Put all ingredients into a Vitamix or other high-powered blender.
Blend on high until thoroughly pureed.
Enjoy!

I've been reflecting a lot on trails this winter a I've been reflecting a lot on trails this winter and feeling how grateful I am that my work, especially coaching, is rooted in relationships.

One-with-one coaching can mean many different things, but it always involves connecting, listening, question-asking, and co-learning. At its best, it highlights what’s possible—possible in writing, relations, and life.

If you're interested in learning more or want to try a session, reach out. I'm here.

*This photo shows me standing next to a carved statue of two bears (adult and cub). Bears remind me of the importance of introspection and self-work, especially during the winter hibernation season. What are you reflecting on these days?

PASS IT ON, COPY/PASTE:

From Jenin to Memphis to Atlanta, the wave of grief from losing our people to cops & soldiers must end. Defund them:

1. Abolish the police and #StopCopCity. #DefundThePolice
